PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

2024 Enrolments Finalised

It was great to meet our new Foundation 2024 families last week for our Launchpad Program. Enrolments are now closed, and we look forward to Launchpad Learning beginning next week. This officially starts our Foundation transition and preparing our students for school.

At this stage we are at capacity, and we ask that you please email the office as soon as possible if you are looking at moving from Wandong next year. This early notification helps us ensure other families have the opportunity to enrol and are currently on a โ€˜wait listโ€™.

PLEASE NOTIFY US IF YOU KNOW OF

Slap Face, Measles or Chickenpox at Wandong Primary School

Please be aware that students in our school community are currently receiving medical treatment. They participate actively in the normal school program without any major limitations. A major concern, however, is if this student develops slap face, measles or chickenpox, he/she can become seriously ill. I seek your cooperation in preventing this situation. If your son/daughter has or may have measles or chickenpox, I request that you do not send them to school during this period and notify the class teacher as soon as possible.

Itโ€™s OK to lose โ€“ why we need to stop shielding kids from failure

I urge our families to listen to this interview with Hugh Van Cuylenberg from the Resilience Project and educator and parenting expert, Clark Right. http://www.abc.net.au/radio/perth/programs/focus/letting-kids-lose/10078520

Some key quotes:

  • Are they missing out on vital life skills that demand resilience?
  • It comes from a loving place but we are wrapping our kids in cotton wool.
  • We need to step back as parents.
  • Gratitude, empathy, mindfulness, failure and hardship to have a life where they can resolve problems themselves.
  • Kids are scared of failing and so donโ€™t take positive risks; therefore, theyโ€™re not going to experience adversity to become resilient.
  • We donโ€™t get a trophy for just rocking up to work, we need to mimic real life.
  • We have to back our teachers in more, they are highly skilled and highly trained.
  • We need to let kids lose and unwrap children from cotton wool.
  • We donโ€™t protect our kids by making them happy all the time.
  • We are in a world that demands resilience.

Reminder โ€“ Tuesday 15th WHOLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM DAY

Please note from our calendar that Tuesday next week, the 15th of August is a pupil free day. Staff will be collaborating on all thingโ€™s wellbeing, with our classroom teachers and integration support honing in on how we are supporting our students. Please reach out to TheirCare who will be running a program on that day.

Child Safety!

Children have the right to be safe and protected, including at school. Wandong Primary School is committed to keeping children safe. Child abuse, and arrangements that allow it to occur, will not be tolerated at our school. Please take the time to read our relevant policies and information surrounding Child Safe Standards, which can be found on our public website. Please be aware that you can contact Stephanie Pollock (Assistant Principal), Jessica Woods (Coordinator in charge of Student Wellbeing) or me as Principal at any time through the office. In our role as the schools Child Safety leaders, it is our responsibility to ensure that we provide authoritative advice, raise awareness and ensure all staff have the relevant training.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

Recently I checked the attendance rates for students so far this year. It was fantastic to see a number of children with excellent attendance. Less than 5 days absence so far this year. Unfortunately, there are a number of children who have had a significant absence rate already this year. Some interesting information:

  • 40 days absence per year is equivalent to missing one day per week.
  • If your child misses more than 12 days per year, then they could miss over half a year of learning from Prep to Year 10.
  • If your child misses more than 20 days per year, then they will miss over one year of learning from Prep to Year 10.
  • If your child misses 36 days per year, then they could miss over two years of learning from Prep to Year 10.

Coming to school everyday to learn is an absolute necessity.ย Our students cannot learn effectively if they have a significant number of days off, or even if they are regular late comers.ย

WELLBEING

SEW in 34M

This week, 34M looked at the catastrophe scale.

This session developed studentsโ€™ emotional literacy by looking at emotions, how we cycle through emotions, what zone our emotions sit within and how they translate to the catastrophe scale. Students looked at the โ€˜bigger pictureโ€™ to understand that even though an event may seem like the big problem, when we look at the bigger picture we can see that the problem we are having is not the worst problem and can be solved using a few simple steps and the ability to self-regulate.

NOTICES

Office Hours

Please note that the school office hours are 8:30am until 4:15pm.

Picking Up Children โ€“ Please help our admin team!

In exceptional circumstances and emergencies, at times children need to be collected from school early. Please help our wonderful administration team by ensuring that this is not done during the break times of 11:00-11:30am and 1:45-2:30pm. When children are outside playing with their friends, they do not hear the announcements and it is difficult to have a staff member unlock classrooms to collect bags and belongings. Please help support our classroom programs by waiting until 3:30pm to collect children. The admin area is growing quite hectic in the afternoons with families collecting children early Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.

IMPORTANT โ€“ Mobile Phone/Watch/Device Policy

In 2020, DET introduced strict restrictions on the use of any device with access to a cellular system, with or without a physical connection to a network. Where students bring a device of this type to school, it MUST be placed in secure storage at the office.

IMPORTANT โ€“ Student Information

It is very important we have up-to-date information for all students. Please check Compass and update current home & email addresses, phone numbers & medical details.
