PARKING ILLEGALLY
Please note that the double gates on Rail Street have โNO PARKING AT ANYTIMEโ signs. Please abide by our road rules and know that parking inspectors have and will fine you if you are parked in this area before, after, or during the school day. There is a long kiss and drop parking area right in front of the school, as well as significant space around the school to park and drop children off at before school care. Please DO NOT park in front of these gates, as it has impacted vehicles being able to access the school grounds prior to the start of the day.
CAN YOU HELP MR FEARN AND MS YARNI? ANYONE?
Mr Fearn and Ms Yarni are working hard to expand our Bike Education program at Wandong. However, we are desperate for a new bike shed space. We have ideas and some potential plans, but we are poor โน We would love someone, anyone who might be able to assist with concreting, bike stand installation, roofing, in fact any help would be wonderful. Please if you have a company or have skills in these areas, we would so value and appreciate any offers of support. You can phone the school, email or let Mr Fearn know.

Questions to Ask Kids about their day at school
Get a sense of your child’s life at school by asking questions that elicit more than a one-word response.
The trick is to ask about things that are specific, but still open-ended. Move beyond “good” and “nothing” by asking your kids to describe their world. It’s also great to start the conversation with an anecdote from your own day. Try one of these conversation-starters:
- Tell me about the best part of your day.
- What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
- Did any of your classmates do anything funny?
- Tell me about what you read in class.
- Who did you play with today? What did you play?
- What’s the biggest difference between this year and last year?
- Can you show me something you learned (or did) today?

Meet The Teacher
This year we had the greatest engagement on record at Wandong, with 95% attendance. Our Wandong staff truly cherished the opportunity to connect with parents and carers during the Meet the Teacher meetings. These sessions proved to be an invaluable chance to create a strong foundation of support for each child as we embark on another exciting school year. By gathering insights into studentsโ thoughts, homework habits, organisation skills, reading routines, individual interests, and any health or family matters, our teachers are able to tailor their approach and set meaningful learning and wellbeing goals for every student. We want to extend our warmest thanks to all the parents and carers who took the time to meet with us during the week. And a special shout-out to our incredible staff, who, despite the late nights, continued to radiate enthusiasm and positivity all week long.
ย
Homework
Establishing a consistent homework routine in primary school is essential for developing key skills like time management, responsibility, and organisation. Research shows that regular homework reinforces classroom learning, promotes independence, and enhances academic performance. At Wandong, we expect students to complete their homework on time and to the best of their ability, as itโs a key component of our vision in supporting our students to be confident, independent and resilient learners who strive for personal excellence. Families play a crucial role in supporting the schoolโs focus on education by creating a quiet, distraction free space for homework and establishing a regular time each day for students to complete the simple set tasks. When families and schools work together, it helps students understand the value of education, creates a solid foundation for learning, and nurtures a sense of responsibility that will contribute to their success in the future.
ย
Foundies
Next week marks an exciting milestone for our littlest members of the Wandong family as they begin their full-time school journey! We know theyโll be full of energy and excitement, but we also expect they might feel a little tired along the way, so we kindly encourage our little ones to get plenty of rest by heading to bed early. A huge thank you to our amazing families for your unwavering support and dedication throughout our testing period, as well as for making time to attend your teacher appointments. Your involvement means the world to us and helps create the best start to the year!
ย
LABOUR DAY โ PUBLIC HOLIDAY โ TERM 1 CURRICULUM DAY
Monday 10th March is the Labour Day Public Holiday. The school will be closed for the day. Tuesday 11th March, our staff will be taking a deep dive into the new Mathematics Curriculum. Please book in with TheirCare if you require care for your child on this day. For those not registered yet, the childcare rebate is up to 95%.
ย
Court orders and Custody Papers
From time-to-time issues with families require Custody and Intervention Orders. The school has to have current documentation to be able to support families in managing these issues. We are unable to prevent either party from collecting children if we donโt have current documentation. If circumstances within your family require orders to be put in place you will need to provide a copy to the school. Please let the school know if circumstances change resulting in the removal of these orders.
ย
Attendance, Family Holidays, Principal Approval
Please note that any absence where a child is not sick or has an appointment, requires Principal approval as per DET policy (see last weekโs newsletter). As we know, attendance directly correlates to student achievement and engagement in learning. It is important that students are not missing learning and we ask that family holidays are planned around the holiday periods. Together, we can achieve great things. We really need our little people at school.

Fundraising
Wandong has come such a long way in the past five to six years, and we are now reaping the incredible rewards of all the hard work that has been poured into teaching, learning, and our community. Our students’ learning outcomes are soaring above state averages, and our wellbeing model is being spruiked as best practice, not just within our network but far beyond. The investment weโve made in human resources is significant and goes above and beyond what you would typically find in both private and government schools. Wandong has earned a well-deserved reputation for its innovative teaching approaches, and weโre now seeing visitors from universities and schools across the state eager to learn from what weโve built together.
Over the years, Iโve fought tirelessly alongside our dedicated team with various government bodies, councils, and the VSBA (Victorian Schools Building Authority), sending countless emails year after year, advocating for much-needed improvements to our facilities.
But today, weโre about to embark on something truly exciting, the โturning of the first sodโ for our $10.1 million capital works building project. We also kicked off this year with our brand-new playground, and itโs already been a big hit with our students. Theyโre having so much fun exploring the new climbing structures and seeing the active play is so heartwarming. Itโs been amazing to see their faces light up as they enjoy these new play opportunities and create lasting memories with their friends.
When I first arrived at Wandong in 2019, the condition of our sporting facilities and play spaces, especially our oval, received a great deal of feedback, sadly none of it positive. However, with an enormous THANK YOU to our community and PAFA for their unwavering dedication to fundraising and for sticking with us through thick and thin, weโve been able to transform the tiered area in front of the flagpole into a beautiful space for passive play and assemblies. Weโve also completely overhauled the oval, turning it into a sporting space that can accommodate a variety of team sports. This project included essential drainage upgrades and the addition of rock seating along the bank. Thanks to the extraordinary effort of our fundraising efforts over the past two years, combined with significant savings from the schoolโs budget, WE DID IT!
Butโฆ this is not the end! Weโve also designed an exciting new basketball court area above the oval, which will be completed once the capital works are finished and Little Land is demolished. We do need to stay the course and continue to save all our pennies, so we can again achieve a great outcome for our students. Our fundraising efforts are far from over, and with the continued commitment of our community, we know we can achieve awesome upgrades to our facilities. Letโs keep saving, keep working, and complete worthwhile projects together.
Our SRC Vision
This year, our Student Representative Council (SRC) are excited to take on the project of rebuilding our Chicken Coop. All their fundraising efforts will go towards purchasing this Grand Barn and with the help of our Buildings and Grounds Maintenance worker, Tom, we hope to complete this project by the end of the year. Letโs go SRC!

Picking Up Children โ Please help our admin team!
In exceptional circumstances and emergencies, at times children need to be collected from school early. Please help our wonderful administration team by ensuring that this is not done during the break times of 11:00-11:30am and 1:45-2:30pm. When children are outside playing with their friends, they do not hear the announcements and it is difficult to have a staff member unlock classrooms to collect bags and belongings. Please help support our classroom programs by waiting until 3:30pm to collect children. The admin area is growing quite hectic in the afternoons with families collecting children early. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.
IMPORTANT: โ Mobile Phone/Watch/Device Policy
In 2020, DET introduced strict restrictions on the use of any device with access to a cellular system, with or without a physical connection to a network. Where students bring a device of this type to school, it MUST be placed in secure storage at the office.
IMPORTANT: โ Student Information
It is very important we have up-to-date information for all students. Please check Compass and update current home & email address, phone numbers & medical details.

Reminder: –
Hats must be worn throughout Term one & Term four outside. If they don’t have a hat, they can only play in a shaded area.
