PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Staffing

Next week we welcome Ms Domino to 1/2L, as we wish Ms Langdon a wonderful and well deserved get away with her family. Have an amazing trip Ms Langdon!

Questions to Ask Kids about their day at school

Get a sense of your child’s life at school by asking questions that elicit more than a one-word response.

The trick is to ask about things that are specific, but still open-ended. Move beyond “good” and “nothing” by asking your kids to describe their world. It’s also great to start the conversation with an anecdote from your own day. Try one of these conversation-starters:

  1. Tell me about the best part of your day.
  2. What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
  3. Did any of your classmates do anything funny?
  4. Tell me about what you read in class.
  5. Who did you play with today? What did you play?
  6. What’s the biggest difference between this year and last year?
  7. Can you show me something you learned (or did) today?

Parent Helper and Interventions Support Training Sessions

Next week we have scheduled our Parent Helper and Intervention Support Training Sessions. If you would like to assist in your childโ€™s classroom, we would love to have you! All parent helpers need to provide a Volunteer Working with Childrenโ€™s Check card, which is free and are required to attend one of our 30 minute training sessions. Please access this information on your Compass newsfeed.

Meet the Teacher

Our Wandong staff found the Meet the Teacher meetings incredibly valuable to connect with parents and carers. These meetings provided a valuable opportunity to establish a strong foundation for supporting each child throughout the school year. Gathering insights into student perceptions, homework, organisation, reading habits, individual interests, and any health or family-related information enables our teachers to tailor their approaches and set meaningful learning and wellbeing goals for every student. We extend a heartfelt thank you to all parents and carers for making time to meet with us throughout the week. Additionally, a big thanks to our amazing staff, who, despite the late night, maintained their enthusiasm and positivity all week long.

School Review

This year is an exciting year! It is our school review year, where we get to celebrate all our wonderful achievements over the last four years and begin planning for our next goals. Last year, Wandong moved into the INFLUENCE school performance category in reading, school climate and student attitude. This means that our performance is high to very high and has been maintained consistently over three years and is on a positive improvement trajectory. Wandong is acting as an influencer and system leader.

The Department of Education (DET) conducts reviews of schools every 4-5 years. This rigorous process is conducted by the Victorian Registration & Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and the evaluation is completed with support from a DET reviewer.ย  As part of our process, we will be seeking multiple perspectives, from our key stakeholders, our kids, to our families, community and staff. We look forward to your insights into our highlights, what is working well and suggestions for the future. https://forms.gle/SW3pMLPRbUKjGFVW7

Attendance, Family Holidays, Principal Approval

Please note that any absence where a child is not sick or has an appointment, requires Principal approval as per DET policy (see last weekโ€™s newsletter). As we know, attendance directly correlates to student achievement and engagement in learning. It is important that students are not missing learning and we ask that family holidays are planned around the holiday periods. Together, we can achieve great things. We really need our little people at school.

WELLBEING

Social and Emotional Wellbeing lesson in 12N this week! (SEW)

FOCUS: Friendships and personal growth

  • Building and maintaining positive friendships.
  • Values

We discussed the definition of friendship and how we can interact with each other outside. Students participated in โ€˜scenariosโ€™ where they acted out an event that could occur in the yard. We learnt how to ask others to play and considered what values we would like in a good friend.

Young Leaders Day Conference

National Young Leaders Day – By Poppy Tempini

At seven oโ€™clock in the morning we left the house. I was so excited it felt as if I could explode. At school I climbed intoย  Miss Morrowโ€™s car I was already fidgety. The drive to Craigieburn was long but enjoyable Hollie, Deegan, Zara and I were playing spotto with yellow, green and pink cars. We turned down a quite road there was a park it had a yellow slide and a set of blue monkey bars and an orange noughts and crossโ€™ board. We jumped out of the car and grabbed our bags then Miss Woods handed me a Myki card for the train.

Walking toward the train station everyone was puling out their Myki card out of their bag, we all scanned our cards and hopped on the train we found the perfect seats of there was six and they were in a row and then the train started itโ€™s engine we were of to the national young leaders day. We got off the train after a while, we were running a bit late so we ran and ran a lot.

Entering the Melbourne Convention Centre we were all so excited it looked like a theatre. We took our seats in the end of the middle section. First Anastasia Woolmer entered the stage and told us her story about how she was โ€œtwice crowned the Australian memory championโ€, and what it was like to be on the tv show Survivor then we had our break.

After the break we all sat down again the Bryson Klein told us about his life as a Ninja Warrior grand finalist.

Most hear the name Jane Bun and atomically think of the weather lady, but she is heaps more. She is a highly accomplished meteorologist and a household name across Victoria. Janes passion started when she was a child. She graduated and was clueless on what she would dedicate her life to until she was 18 and went to the snow for the first time. And thatโ€™s when she decided she would be a meteorologist. After a long time studying she finally got her dream job as a weather presenter on the news. I was quite interested in her speech and what she had to say and the message she left us all with – make sure itโ€™s your dream no matter what youโ€™re paid.

We had a break after Jane Bun. After the break Melissa Barbieri entered the stage and told us all about her childhood and how she got to be the Matildas goalie in the Olympics.

We got back after a long day, but on the way home we saw galloping horses on the Hume Highway so we called the Police and then finally got back to school.ย ย

NOTICES

Office Hours

New : Please note the school office hours are 8:30am until 3.55pm

Picking Up Children โ€“ Please help our admin team!

In exceptional circumstances and emergencies, at times children need to be collected from school early. Please help our wonderful administration team by ensuring that this is not done during the break times of 11:00-11:30am and 1:45-2:30pm. When children are outside playing with their friends, they do not hear the announcements and it is difficult to have a staff member unlock classrooms to collect bags and belongings. Please help support our classroom programs by waiting until 3:30pm to collect children. The admin area is growing quite hectic in the afternoons with families collecting children early Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.

IMPORTANT โ€“ Mobile Phone/Watch/Device Policy
