PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Outstanding Payments

We are currently finalising our Term One accounts and would appreciate it if you could please make payment for any outstanding expenses. Thank you to all who have paid their parent payment for 2025. This money is used to provide the best possible learning experiences and resources for your children. Please remember you can pay in instalments, just contact Marg or myself in the office to make arrangement. Essential Education items are purchased by the school for children and it is expected that they are paid promptly.

Remember that Curriculum Consumable Items are just that. They are the fruit and vegetables of your shopping list. These are the items that should be purchased as priority ahead of the chocolate and ice-cream. Absolutely chocolate and ice cream is nice to have, but we always place priority on the essential items first. The Essential Education Items at Wandong are less than $4.00 a week and the office can assist you with any payment plan that meets your needs. Optional Education Items, e.g., camps and excursions can also be paid on a payment plan, alongside Curriculum Consumable Items. Please come and speak with Marg (Business Manager) or myself if youโ€™d like to discuss this arrangement.

Communication

Wandong has a number of communication means and platforms. It is imperative that the correct and most appropriate channel is used to ensure we are able to provide the most helpful and timely response. In summary:

  • Student absences โ€“ log on Compass and family holidays must have Principal approval prior
  • Change to contact details that are short term โ€“ email the teacher and call the office 5787 1232
  • Change to contact details e.g. phone numbers and address โ€“ log on Compass.
  • Urgent issue โ€“ contact office 5787 1232
  • Discuss a studentโ€™s academic progress, health or wellbeing โ€“ make an appointment with classroom teacher.
  • Quick/easy question or clarification โ€“ email to appropriate person. Seesaw is not appropriate in this instance.
  • NOTE: Our official Facebook group is progressing well and it is growing exponentially. It is our intention that parents are utilising our official group for day-to-day communications within the community. It is important to note that staff administrators are not on this site 24/7 and wonโ€™t be available to answer pertinent questions. This is not a DET formal communication platform.
  • NOTE: Seesaw is being utilised across the school to share with our families, the achievements made by students, as well as opening the doors of the classrooms to families, metaphorically speaking. If you have any questions, require clarification or would like to discuss anything relating to your childโ€™s academic progress, health or wellbeing, you should make an appointment with the classroom teacher.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

The Department of Education initiative EVERY DAY COUNTS highlights the importance of regular school attendance.

  • Going to school every day is the single most important part of your childโ€™s education. Students learn new things at school every day โ€“ missing school or being late to school puts them behind.

ย

SCHOOL IS BETTER WHEN YOUR CHILD IS THERE

ย

Why itโ€™s important

  • We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day.
  • If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school.
  • There is no safe number of days for missing school โ€“ each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.
  • Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.

ย

Getting in early

  • Attendance patterns are established early โ€“ a child regularly missing days in kindergarten or in the early years of school will often continue to miss classes in the later years, and receive lower test scores than their classmates.
  • Itโ€™s vital that students go to school every day โ€“ even in the early years of primary school.ย

ย

In Victoria school is compulsory for children and young people aged 6 -17 years

ย

Student Absences

The main reasons for absence are:

  • Sicknessย โ€“ There are always times when students need to miss school, such as when theyโ€™re ill. Itโ€™s vital that theyโ€™re only away on the days they are genuinely sick, and developing good sleep patterns, eating well and exercising regularly can make a big difference.
  • Family holidays– It’s vital that holidays are planned during school holidays where possible, and not during the term. If you are planning to go on holiday during term time, make sure that you talk to the school in advance, so we can discuss holiday learning tasks such as keeping a journal or continuing with online learning tasks.
  • โ€œDay offโ€โ€“ Think twice before letting your child have a โ€œday offโ€ as they could fall behind their classmates โ€“ every day counts.
  • Truancyย โ€“ This is when students choose not to go to school without their parentโ€™s permission. There can be many reasons for truancy. The best way to address this is for schools and parents to work together.
  • School refusal– School refusing children will experience significant emotional distress not only when going to school but also at the thought of going to school; they may be absent from school for weeks or even months at a time. School refusal differs from truancy as children generally stay home with the knowledge of the parents and despite their best efforts to encourage their child to go to school.

ย

BEING AWAY FROM SCHOOL FOR ONE DAY A FORTNIGHT EQUALS MISSING 1.5 YEARS OVER 13 YEARS OF SCHOOL

ย

If your child is away

  • Parents/carers are required to ensure their child attends school every day and have an obligation to enter the absence onto Compass or contact the school to notify their childโ€™s absence. Parents/carers should inform the school or log the absence on Compass in advance of known upcoming absences, or on the day of absence as soon as practicable. In addition, in order to implement this requirement, it is essential that parent/carers provide schools with their most up-to-date contact details.
  • Remember,ย every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with the classroom teacher as early as possible.
  • Openly communicating with the school about all absences is a good way to prevent attendance issues being escalated to a School Attendance Officer. A School Attendance Officer is a Department of Education Regional Director who has authority to follow up attendance issues. Chronic or ongoing attendance issues that are escalated can lead to an Infringement Notice being issued to parent/s.
  • If youโ€™re having attendance issues with your child, please let the classroom teacher know so we can work together to get your child to school every day.

Top attendance tips for parents

  • Schools want to work in partnership with parents โ€“ act early if you have any concerns by contacting the school and asking for advice and support
  • Remember that every day counts
  • There is no safe number of days for missing school โ€“ each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes and their social connectedness
  • Talk positively about school and the importance of attending every day.
  • Open and prompt communication with the school about all absences is a good idea.
  • Avoid making routine medical and dental appointments during the school day or planning family holidays during the term.
  • Seek help from the school if you are concerned about your childโ€™s attendance and wellbeing. Schools want to work in partnership with parents to support student attendance and wellbeing.

SOME IMPORTANT REMIMDERS FROM LAST WEEK

Foundation 2026

In 2026 we again need to reduce our Foundation intake, so we are asking that all current families submit their enrolment application form for siblings asap. We are not able to guarantee a position at Wandong after the enrolment closing date if we are not your closest school. Thank you in advance for making this a priority this coming week.

TheirCare (Outside of School Hours Care)

Please be aware that if your child is not registered with TheirCare they will be unable to access the program in an emergency. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you register your child/ren with TheirCare in case you may need it one day. This is particularly relevant following our fire scare on Monday afternoon when families were held up due to road closures etc. Children are not able to be cared for in the office administration area.

Reporting Changes, Semester One, 2025

We are always listening to community feedback and want to create a reporting process which works well for both the school and families. It has been a number of years since we have made changes to our reports, and we feel that we can make some adjustments to better meet the needs of you- our current families.

Please see attached information about the proposed reporting changes.

Mathematics Reporting

It may feel like some time away, but we wish to keep you informed about some upcoming changes to student reports. All Department of Education schools are required to transition to the new Mathematics Curriculum version 2.0 this year.

This new curriculum has necessitated changes to student reporting. Previously, we reported student progress across three areas of Mathematics:

  • Measurement and Geometry
  • Number and Algebra
  • Statistics and Probability

Reports used to look like this:

The new Mathematics curriculum is now structured into six interconnected strands:

  • Number (F โ€“ 6)
  • Algebra (F โ€“ 6)
  • Measurement (F โ€“ 6)
  • Space (F โ€“ 6)
  • Statistics (F โ€“ 6)
  • Probability (Year 3 โ€“ Year 6 only)

Your childโ€™s report will include a single, aggregated score for Mathematics that will look like this.

Because this will be our first time reporting against the Mathematics 2.0 standards, student reports will not show a progression dotted line in Semester 1. Student progress will be shown as normal, in Semester 2.

ย

As a school we are well placed to make this transition, having prepared for the upcoming changes to the curriculum and reporting throughout 2024.

SEW

SEW - 3/4B

In the 3/4 cohort we have been learning about our mindsets. We were all excited to learn that our brain has over 100 billion neurons. Neurons connect like a highway through effort, struggles, failures, mistakes and learning. We discussed the difference between having a fixed or a growth mindset. When things are difficult and we want to say โ€œI canโ€™t do this.โ€โ€ฆโ€ฆ.

  • I fail now, so I can master later.
  • I canโ€™t do it, YET!
  • Mistakes are how I learn.
  • Whatever happens, Iโ€™ll handle it.
  • Iโ€™ll do my best.
  • This is tough, but so am I!

There are many positive benefits to having a growth mindset.

  • You have more motivation to learn. You have increased persistence.
  • You have greater confidence. You believe you can grow and change.
  • You face and embrace new challenges. You have a sense of achievement.
  • You think positively. You are aware and listen to feedback.

The children then created their own posters to sort our fixed mindsets and growth mindsets. They expressed that they wanted to keep them in their bedrooms, so when they are feeling down, they can look at them to cheer themselves up!

OFFICE NOTICES

Office Hours : - 8:30am until 3:55pm

Picking Up Children โ€“ Please help our admin team!

In exceptional circumstances and emergencies, at times children need to be collected from school early. Please help our wonderful administration team by ensuring that this is not done during the break times of 11:00-11:30am and 1:45-2:30pm. When children are outside playing with their friends, they do not hear the announcements and it is difficult to have a staff member unlock classrooms to collect bags and belongings. Please help support our classroom programs by waiting until 3:30pm to collect children. The admin area is growing quite hectic in the afternoons with families collecting children early. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.

IMPORTANT: โ€“ Mobile Phone/Watch/Device Policy

In 2020, DET introduced strict restrictions on the use of any device with access to a cellular system, with or without a physical connection to a network. Where students bring a device of this type to school, it MUST be placed in secure storage at the office.

IMPORTANT: โ€“ Student Information

It is very important we have up-to-date information for all students. Please check Compass and update current home & email address, phone numbers & medical details.

Reminder: –

Hats must be worn throughout Term one & Term four outside. If they don’t have a hat, they can only play in a shaded area.

ย **Kids can get messy, please be organised & keep an extra set of clothes in your childโ€™s bag for emergencies.
