PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Have you seen Adolescence?
Potentially, this limited series could, in fact, be called “Children.”
This week, I want to highlight the film “Adolescence,” which offers a compelling look at the struggles young people face in today’s digital world, with a particular focus on the challenges posed by social media.
As a school, we are acutely aware of the increasing influence of social media on our students, even at the primary school level. The film “Adolescence” explores how platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok can shape a teenagerโs self-image, friendships, and emotional well-being. While the movie mainly focuses on teenagers, the issues it raises are becoming more relevant for younger children as well.
In recent years, weโve seen growing concerns around our primary school-aged children being exposed to social media at earlier ages. Whether itโs through their own accounts or interactions with older siblings or friends, many students are encountering digital spaces before they are fully equipped to handle the pressure and complexities they bring. These platforms often create unrealistic standards of beauty, success, and happiness, leading to issues with self-esteem, anxiety, and social comparison. In the film, we see the main character struggle with these very pressures, trying to fit in while grappling with a constant need for online validation.
We want to acknowledge the reality that many of our students are already navigating these digital spaces, even if they are not yet on social media platforms themselves. They may be exposed to content online or see how social media affects their friends, which can lead to feelings of confusion or insecurity. The comparison, the relentless pressure to keep up, and even the risk of cyberbullying are concerns we see increasingly in younger children.
As parents, it is important to be proactive in addressing these issues. Open conversations about what children see online, setting healthy boundaries, and educating them about the risks of social media can help reduce some of the negative impacts. “Adolescence” provides a powerful opportunity to reflect on these challenges and consider how we can better support our children in the digital age.
If you would like additional resources or have concerns about how to manage social media use at home,
Help โ 31%
As we approach the end of Term 1, we warmly remind you to finalise any outstanding school payments. Your contributions greatly enrich our students’ educational journeys, and we truly appreciate your support. We are just unable to make the impact and provide the resources we do without your assistance.

Out of our 499 students, 140 have completed payments, 17 are on a payment plan, 126 are awaiting payment, and 216 have not yet started. This means 31% of our families are actively contributing, and for that, we are grateful.
ย
Essential Education Items, such as books, art supplies, materials, photocopying, sports equipment, paper, and stationery, are available for less than $4.00 per week. We encourage timely payments, but we are more than happy to arrange flexible plans to accommodate your needs. For assistance, please reach out to Marg in our office.
ย
For Optional Education Items, like camps and excursions, the CSEF and School Bonus can provide financial support, though these funds do not cover essential items.
ย
If you have any questions or would like to discuss a payment plan, please feel free to contact Marg, our Business Manager, or myself. We are here to support you!
ย
Practicing Gratitude
At Wandong, our staff begin each meeting with an “Attitude of Gratitude,” where we reflect on what weโve been thankful for over the past week. This practice has become a meaningful part of our routine, and the benefits are backed by research. Studies show that regularly practicing gratitude can help shift our mindset, improve mental well-being, and even strengthen relationships. It encourages us to focus on the positives, which in turn can make us more resilient in the face of challenges.
ย
This is something you can easily try at home, perhaps around the dinner table with your family. Take turns sharing something youโre grateful for from the dayโwhether itโs something small, like a good meal, or something big, like a personal achievement. The beauty of this practice lies in its simplicity: it helps train our brains to seek out the good in every situation. Over time, this small habit can have a big impact, fostering a more positive outlook on life and encouraging deeper connections with those around us.
ย
ANZAC Day Service โ Thursday 24th April
We are excited to be able to run our service once again this year and as always, we are inordinately proud of our leaders who will be facilitating this wonderful event. All children will gather on the tiered banks in front of the flag poles at 2.30pm.

Wishing You a Safe and Enjoyable Holiday
Itโs hard to believe, but next week marks the end of Term 1โFriday, April 4th, is just around the corner! It feels like we just started the year, but here we are, about to head into the Easter holidays. I hope you can take some time to relax, recharge, and cherish both the big and small things that bring you happiness and peace.
Term 2 will be a big one as we move into winter and say goodbye to the longer days of Daylight Savings (Iโll admit, Iโm already mourning those extra hours of sunlightโI vote to keep Daylight Savings year-round!).
Weโre all looking forward to welcoming everyone back next term, bright-eyed and ready for the challenges ahead. Please note, weโll be finishing at 2:30pm on Friday, April 4th.
Wishing you a restful, safe, and joyful holiday!

ย Still Close to my Heart (and in case you missed it last week) – Did You Know?
As we all work together to make Wandong Primary School a place of excellence, itโs important to recognise the immense value of the limited student-free days we are provided. These days are crucial for our teachers and support staff to engage in essential professional development, collaborative planning, assessment, moderation, and to fulfil the numerous administrative and compliance requirements necessary to ensure a high-quality education for our students.
ย
However, the reality is that there are far too few hours in the year to accomplish everything required. With an ever-growing list of expectations, from curriculum planning and implementing additional support programs, to meeting OHS compliance and mandatory training, the time available always falls short. Our staff are stretched thin, and without student-free days, it becomes an impossible feat to prioritise what has to be โlet goโ from all these demands, whilst always working to support teachers in continuing to improve their practice.
ย
Itโs also important to note that these minimal student-free hours are just the start. Beyond the regular 38-hour work week, our teachers frequently volunteer additional time away from their own families for school camps, after-school activities, weekend events, provision of three-way conferences, parent meetings, as well as providing extra programs to ensure the holistic development of our students and prioritising student and family engagement. The time they spend going above and beyond is invaluable and indicative of the selfless, giving, and grateful culture we have built at Wandong.
Supporting our teachers and staff through critical student-free days ensures they have the time to focus on their professional growth and other mandated duties, ensuring the quality of education at Wandong Primary remains strong and continues to grow. Our teachers are committed to your childโs success, but they need sanctioned and prioritised time and support to do this effectively.
ย
A positive school culture, one that values and supports our teachers’ well-being, is at the heart of providing the best learning environment for our students. When our teachers and support staff are given the time they need to grow and plan, it directly impacts the positive, student-centred programs we deliver every day.
ย
Did you knowโฆ We greatly value our home/school partnerships and are eternally grateful to be working together to ensure our Wandong staff have the resources and time they need to help your children thrive.

Easter Raffle
Thank you to all our wonderful families who are organising their Easter Raffle donations. Remember to ensure you buy a raffle ticket or ten, as there are always amazingly huge hampers on offer. I know that the children will enjoy their free dress day. There will no doubt be some members of our school community who have sore bellies after indulging in their winnings! However, I know these prizes have always been a welcome supply of gifts.

In Foundation S, we have been learning about a variety of things to support our Social, Emotional and Wellbeing.
Our favourite topic we have learnt about is โTruth and Honesty.โ We have been learning about the importance of truth and honesty and how it helps build trust in our friendships.
In Foundation S, we have listened to stories and songs about truth and honesty. The students have also created their own acrostic poem to use as a reminder.

Honesty is best.
Others can trust you.
Nice and kind to others.
Everyone should be honest.
Solve problems.
Tell the truth.
You can be honest!

OFFICE NOTICES
Office Hours : - 8:30am until 3:55pm
Picking Up Children โ Please help our admin team!
In exceptional circumstances and emergencies, at times children need to be collected from school early. Please help our wonderful administration team by ensuring that this is not done during the break times of 11:00-11:30am and 1:45-2:30pm. When children are outside playing with their friends, they do not hear the announcements and it is difficult to have a staff member unlock classrooms to collect bags and belongings. Please help support our classroom programs by waiting until 3:30pm to collect children. The admin area is growing quite hectic in the afternoons with families collecting children early. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.
IMPORTANT: โ Mobile Phone/Watch/Device Policy
In 2020, DET introduced strict restrictions on the use of any device with access to a cellular system, with or without a physical connection to a network. Where students bring a device of this type to school, it MUST be placed in secure storage at the office.
