Happy Motherโs Day
This weekend we get to celebrate all those who take on the role of a mother, in whatever form this takes. On this special day, we would like to express our gratitude and appreciation for everything that mums and mother figures do in our community and beyond. Itโs so important at Wandong that we do acknowledge and celebrate the amazing humans we have at our school. Around the world, mothers are leading the way – juggling jobs, working from home, joining classrooms, keeping order and stability in homes and still finding time to be just that little bit more patient with everyone. The love, care, and support you provide are invaluable, and as a school we would like to acknowledge your unwavering dedication, tireless efforts, and endless sacrifices. Thank you for being our partners in education and for entrusting us with the development of your children. Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mothers out there! We hope you get some time for you and are spoilt this coming Sunday.
Response to Intervention
WPS is fortunate to have a four-tier Literacy Intervention model, which aims to provide early assistance for children who are falling below the expected benchmarks. This model employs a large team of teachers, education support educators and allied health professionals, who regularly work with children of all ages to improve their learning outcomes. As a school, we value early intervention, so that we can set students up for success in the later years of their primary school journey.
This year is our second year that we are thrilled to welcome our Parent Intervention Helpers (PIHs) to our intervention team. This volunteer group of parents attended a training session in Term One to understand how to provide intervention supports for students. This term, our PIHs have begun working in classrooms to support students accessing Tier One Literacy Intervention. This is an invaluable way that we can offer some of our students the little boost they need, to close their learning gaps. Across the school, students accessing Tier Two supports continue to be supported by our amazing Education Support Staff team, Tier Three supports are delivered by our Teacher Tutors and Tier Four supports are supported by our Student Wellbeing and Engagement team. This model is overseen by our Assistant Principal of Curriculum, Ms Stephanie Pollock. We continue to hold these wonderful people in awe as they work tirelessly to support our children.
Curriculum Contributions โ PLEASE ACTION
Thank you to all our families who have prioritised their payment of the Curriculum Contributions. 42% of our families have either completed payment or have organised a payment plan. Instruction in all government schools is free, however; consumable items and most activities that are essential for student learning are not covered. The school purchases all these resources for the children at Wandong in order for classrooms have what is needed for their programs from the start of the year. I know many of our teachers often purchase items for students in their classes because, as teachers, we all know that budgets are super tight. The school will always provide alternative financial support options. Please phone the office to have a confidential conversation.
Optional items are activities that are in addition to the standard curriculum. They are not essential, for example, excursions, camp, sporting and music programs. Students access these on a user-pays basis. Curriculum Contributions should be paid as priority over Optional Education Items.
Thank you to our families who are investing in our school by making a tax-deductible donation to our Library and Building Funds. This will go a long way to resourcing our library, ICT and much needed building and grounds work. As we begin looking at possible sporting facilities, including passive and active play turfed spaces, this is more important than ever.
Camp Costs
Wandong is renowned for its camping program. We have forever worked hard to make this whole school event work, even when we were in the depths of Covid. With the price of buses and venues continually increasing costs, this does mean that these events do also increase in cost. We must also acknowledge that our staff actually volunteer their time to attend camp, when in fact they are entitled to 24-hour payment when on duty. Our staff value these events and the opportunity this provides for our children and families. This staffing cost is not factored into the camp total, which in fact would significantly increase costs even more. Please note that camps are completely optional and at no stage are any families or children pressured into attending these events. As we all know, our Curriculum Consumables should be paid as priority, as these support our children with the core curriculum. Please, if you have any questions, please reach out to your childโs teacher, Mr Fearn or a member of leadership.
Uniform
When children are wearing the Wandong uniform, they are representing our school. This includes when they are coming and going from school, on the roads and outside in the community. The behaviour and conduct of our students is often communicated to school staff and it is imperative that children are aware that they must be upholding the same values. Our uniform should be worn with a sense of pride and demonstrating the high expectations we have at our awesome school.
Working Bees
We are excited to welcome our families into our school to help in our cohort working bees this year. Every area of the school has been allocated an hour on a Friday afternoon between 2:30 3:30pm to complete some manageable jobs around our school and giving our students a sense of pride and responsibility. Please put the above dates into your calendar and bring a wheelbarrow, shovel, watering can, bucket and a hammer
Homework
The importance and relevance of homework has been hotly debated for many years, quite possibly centuries ๐ It is the bane of many professionals lives as well as some families, however; on the other side of the fence are those who thrive and love it. The age-old problem of never pleasing everyone all the time. What we do know and what research indicates is:
1. Time management and organisation – Students learn about time management and how to prioritise and schedule what needs to be done in a week. An important and lifelong skill. This is critical in preparing our children for high school, further education and eventually employment.
2. Trains students to solve problems โ this is a critical aspect of the learning process. When in a classroom setting, your child is given the unique advantage of problem-solving various questions with the assistance of their teacher. But when at home, they must rely on what they remember and give tasks โa goโ.
3. Gives students another opportunity to review class material – Learning extends to the home environment. When your child completes homework regularly, they are given a unique opportunity to review class material. This constant revision not only builds on their knowledge but also expounds on their ability to recall information fast and identify alternative solutions to the same problem.
4. Students learn to take responsibility for their part in the educational process – Homework is widely considered to be an ideal way to instil responsibility in students. By enforcing homework regularly, students are subconsciously informed on the need to take education seriously. Each assignment completed brings your child a step closer to achieving their educational goals and taking responsibility for their life decisions.
5. Students learn to do things even if they donโt want to – Itโs a fact that most students donโt like homework especially when they must forego their favourite hobbies at home. But enforcing homework on your child is advantageous in teaching them that they must do things even when they donโt want to. Your child should be prepared to do such things that will become prevalent in adulthood. It revolves around embracing sacrifice and foregoing instant gratification for delayed gratification. Being prepared to make sacrifices that will yield remarkable results isnโt reserved only for parents but for their children as well. By embracing sacrifices, your child is in an elevated position to weed out distractions and focus on the task at hand. It isnโt easy but turning off the TV and device is a great way to test their concentration and threshold for sacrifice.
By far the most important body of research is around the impact homework has on a childโs perception of education and the how they view school. When families support this process, research indicates that children value and remain in school longer, achieving improved outcomes compared to their peers.
Please, please reach out to your childโs teacher if you have any questions or require any support. We are here to work together for the benefit of our children.
PARKING REMINDER
PARKING REMINDER
Please note that it is illegal to park in front of the double gates on Rail Street. Parking officers and police will fine you if you are parked here and staff will remind you not to park or stop here. This parking restriction and signage ensures that there is access at any point in time before school, during school and after school in the event of an emergency or staff requiring access.ย
Please ensure you are at no stage parked or stopped in this access point.
REMINDER: Why Three-Way Conferences (3WC)?
ยท A 3WC actively involves parents, students and teachers in reflecting on student achievement, discussing work samples and setting future targets
ยท A 3WC acknowledges the most important participants in the learning process (student, teacher and parent)
ยท They provide a student voice to discussions about performance and targets
ยท They place the student at the heart of the assessment and reporting process
ยท They strengthen the home-school partnership and allow children to see their parents and teacher interact with them.
This day has School Council approval to run as an alternate day. This means your child will only be required to attend school for their 15 minute conference with their teacher. Your child will be marked as โPresentโ when they attend their three-way conference. TheirCare will be operating a program for this day if your child requires care.
ย
Times will be offered from 9:00am to 6:45pm. Each 3WC is allocated 15 minutes. Parents will be able to book via Compass from Friday 7th June at 9:00am.
ย
3WCs take the form of a conversation between the student, their parents/guardians and their teacher. Both approaches give students an opportunity to share with their parents their growth as a learner, which they are always excited to do! They accept accountability and responsibility for their progress and achievement and demonstrate a growing understanding of their development as independent learners.
ย
Specialistย Three Way Conferences
Specialists will also be conductingย appointments for those parents who feel they are necessary. Please note that Specialistย conferences are likely to fill up quickly as many of our specialist teachers work with 300 – 450 students from across the school. It is not expected that parents see these teachers unless this is a subject in which your child is struggling, or youโd like support with. To make an appointment with aย specialist teacher (PE, STEM or Auslan),ย simplyย follow the links on Compass when youย receive the Compass alert.
ย
If your child is receiving Tutor support, Intervention staff (Nicole Kanderovskis, Beth Smith and Jodie Hempel) will also be available for appointments.
ย
Finally, we canโt stress enough the importance of being punctual to your childโsย Three-Way Conference appointment time. Teachers will, in most cases, have appointments back-to-back across the day andย canโt extendย conferences into the scheduled time of another student.
ย
We hope you find theย Three-Way Conference a valuable insight and celebration of your childโs learning achievement and progress since our initial conferences at the beginning of the year.ย
WELLBEING
In our SEW lessons in 5/6C we have been looking at student behaviour data on Compass. Students enjoyed discussing and analysing both the positive and negative occurrences and comparing class, cohort, and school data. We noticed that house points for amazing work and behaviour were logged the most and reflected on the fantastic things we do to earn house points in our class.
We also observed there were repeat incidences of โdisrespectful behaviourโ and spent time looking at how we can change this moving forward both as a class and as individuals. Students completed an activity where they brainstormed different ways to show respect in various settings and with different people, including how they can show respect for themselves.
