PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Mid Term Hump

As we near the halfway mark of Term 4, I want to congratulate our students for their wonderful attitude and work ethic this term. It has been wonderful to see our students engaging with the curriculum and embracing all the learning opportunities that have been presented so far this term. I feel very fortunate to share in the learning journey of our students and celebrate the amazing success that presents itself each and every day. Please continue to talk to your child about their learning and how they have engaged during the day. Reinforcing what is happening at school and the expectations we have in partnership is a game changer for our school and your childโ€™s teacher. A strong home school relationship, we know and research has proven, makes every difference for our children later in life.

New Playground โ€“ facilities are getting done!

Itโ€™s finally happening! Our new oval is complete and our children are loving this new multipurpose play space. Our new playground at the top of the block is underway and will be completed by the end of December, fingers crossed. ๐Ÿ˜ŠAnd, as we are ticking off our large list of work, weโ€™ve now had a number of construction companies tour the site in preparing for our capital works tender process. The retaining wall around our monkey bars near the hall will be completed in the coming week and then we are looking forward to the front bifold glass doors being replaced on our hall.

We canโ€™t thank you enough for your fundraising support and your kind donations made through our tax-deductible funds โ€“ library and buildings and grounds.

Parent Helpersโ€™ Morning Tea – REMINDER

Our annual morning tea to thank all of those who help us during the year (parents, grandparents, friends and volunteers) will be held on Thursday 12th December at 11:00 am in the library. Please mark this date in your diary. The morning tea is our way of saying thank you to all of those volunteers who contribute to making Wandong such a wonderful school.

WANTED AD โ€“ Can you donate some of your time? Can you help? Are you a budding photographer or a photographer with a business?

We are desperately searching for someone who could take some professional photos of our students and grounds with the potential to use these on documents and various platforms. Please contact the school or me directly if you can help โ€“ Kelly.morrow@education.vic.gov.au

We still need your support – Keep Reading @ Home!

As you know, we work extremely hard to provide the highest quality learning for all students at our school. In order for us to maximise on student capabilities, we require your help. As parents and guardians, you have a crucial role to play within the learning framework. Your assistance at home in discussing school is an invaluable aspect of student learning. This provides opportunities for students to reflect and consolidate their understandings. As a minimum, it would be fantastic to set aside some time each night to share a love of literacy. Reading to your child, reading with them, listening to them read to you and discussing stories and other texts is invaluable. Reading each night forms a part of the homework for all students at Wandong.

Read Aloud! Read Aloud! Read Aloud

Mem Fox is one of my favourite authors. I listened to her speak some years ago and I still sit in awe when I hear her read aloud. She shares below some amazing key tips. What she shares has been a passion of mine for the 24 years Iโ€™ve been in education. Reading aloud is directly related to educational outcomes. Instil a love of reading in your children.ย Too precious not to watch and listen to Mem Fox Mem Fox Book Reading – Possum Magic, Whoever You Are, Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes

  1. Spend at least ten wildly happy minutes every single day reading aloud. From birth!
  2. Read at least three stories a day: it may be the same story three times. Children need to hear a thousand stories before they can begin to learn to read. Or the same story a thousand times!
  3. Read aloud with animation. Listen to your own voice and donโ€™t be dull, or flat, or boring. Hang loose and be loud, have fun and laugh a lot.
  4. Read with joy and enjoyment: real enjoyment for yourself and great joy for the listeners.
  5. Read the stories that your child loves, over and over, and over again, and always read in the same โ€˜tuneโ€™ for each book: i.e. with the same intonations and volume and speed, on each page, each time.
  6. Let children hear lots of language by talking to them constantly about the pictures, or anything else connected to the book; or sing any old song that you can remember; or say nursery rhymes in a bouncy way; or be noisy together doing clapping games.
  7. Look for rhyme, rhythm or repetition in books for young children, and make sure the books are really short.
  8. Play games with the things that you and the child can see on the page, such as letting kids finish rhymes. Finding the letters that start the childโ€™s name and yours is always a fabulous game.
  9. Never ever โ€˜teachโ€™ reading, or get tense around books. Just readingย withthem is enough.
  10. Please read aloud every day because you just adore being with your child, not because itโ€™s the right thing to do.

WELLBEING

SEW in Foundation C

Following on from our recent Bravehearts visit, this week in SEW, we talked about Ditto the Lionโ€™s three rules โ€“1. โ€œWe all have the right to feel safe with peopleโ€, 2. โ€œItโ€™s okay to say โ€˜NO!โ€™ if you feel unsafe or unsureโ€, 3. โ€œNothing is so yucky that we canโ€™t tell someone about itโ€. We also talked about our safety team. Our safety team are the adults in our lives who can support us if someone makes us feel scared or unsafe. These are the special people we can tell, who we know will help us and keep us safe. These people may include a parent, family member or a teacher. Students identified five people in their safety team and wrote their names on each finger of a handprint.ย ย

OFFICE NOTICES

Office Hours : - 8:30am until 3:55pm

Picking Up Children โ€“ Please help our admin team!

In exceptional circumstances and emergencies, at times children need to be collected from school early. Please help our wonderful administration team by ensuring that this is not done during the break times of 11:00-11:30am and 1:45-2:30pm. When children are outside playing with their friends, they do not hear the announcements and it is difficult to have a staff member unlock classrooms to collect bags and belongings. Please help support our classroom programs by waiting until 3:30pm to collect children. The admin area is growing quite hectic in the afternoons with families collecting children early. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.

IMPORTANT: โ€“ Mobile Phone/Watch/Device Policy

In 2020, DET introduced strict restrictions on the use of any device with access to a cellular system, with or without a physical connection to a network. Where students bring a device of this type to school, it MUST be placed in secure storage at the office.

IMPORTANT: โ€“ Student Information

It is very important we have up-to-date information for all students. Please check Compass and update current home & email address, phone numbers & medical details.

Reminder: –

Hats must be worn throughout Term Four & Term one outside. If they don’t have a hat, they can only play in a shaded area.

ย **Kids can get messy, please be organised & keep an extra set of clothes in your childโ€™s bag for emergencies.
