PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Parent Helpersโ€™ Morning Tea – REMINDER

Our annual morning tea to thank all of those who help us during the year (parents, grandparents, friends and volunteers) will be held on Thursday 12th December at 11:00 am in the library. Please mark this date in your diary. The morning tea is our way of saying thank you to all of those volunteers who contribute to making Wandong such a wonderful school.

Items Brought From Home

Just a little reminder that children shouldnโ€™t bring anything of large monetary value to school, as lost items can cause some family distress. If children bring items from home into school, they are to take full responsibility for those items at recess breaks, lunch times and in their rooms.

Custody/Court Orders

It is important that families ensure that the school has the most updated Custody/Court Orders. If orders have expired and no longer current, then they are deleted from our system. It is each familyโ€™s responsibility to ensure that the school is kept informed. Please, if you have any questions or concerns, you can make an appointment with myself or Stephanie Pollock.

Library Books โ€“ SHOULD BE RETURNED THIS WEEK

Donโ€™t forget to return all library books and other reading material as soon as possible. Might be a good chance for children to clean up their rooms and look for missing books under their beds.

ย

Principal Certificate of Excellence

Once again for Semester 2, when I finalise reports, all the children that have been awarded an โ€˜EXCELLENTโ€™ for behaviour and effort in every class, including specialists will have a certificate uploaded to Compass. Please make sure you check your childโ€™s dashboard, as there is no alert when I put a comment into the student chronicle.

Academic Excellence

Once again, we will also be highlighting overall academic excellent in English and Maths. Each area of the school, Foundation, Year 1/2s, Year 3/4s and Year 5/6s will moderate all available data for each child in both areas of the curriculum and award one student in each year level.

English Academic Excellence – Students who achieve predominantly excellent standards of achievement in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

Mathematics Academic Excellence- Students who achieve predominantly excellent standards of achievement in Number, Algebra, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics and Probability.

Recognising a studentโ€™s personal achievements for their ongoing and consistent high achievements over the year is of the upmost importance to our school. These will be announced in our final assembly and this certificate of achievement will be awarded to these students and uploaded to their Compass dashboard.

Grade Placement

At Wandong we have a very stringent process for grade placement. On the forefront of our decisions is what we as professionals believe is in the best interest of our children as we prepare them for the future. We completely understand that not getting that one friend or that one teacher is at times challenging, but as teachers, families and community we would be doing our children a disservice if we always allow children to have what they want and always providing what they perceive as their first choice.

A huge number of individual teachers, teams and leadership time has been spent on student and parent friendship considerations.

As professional educators we strive to make the right choices taking into account all of the information we have about students. Teachers have all of the academic and social information about every child and can make sound judgements to meet the needs of every student. Often children/parents request certain friends to be with their child, but itโ€™s important to consider that the school knows the childโ€™s friendships and that placing them without that particular friend might be so that the child expands their friendship base, or for another valid reason. We want children to be able to work and socialise with a variety of other children and build skills to make new friends. In addition, sometimes we may get competing requests from other parents/students/staff that have requested that they not be in the same class. Friendships can and do change throughout primary school – students leave, more students arrive and so it is important for children to develop friendship making skills.

The complexity around all these changing scenarios is when one combination of students are moved to accommodate a request, it then creates a chess game of up to seven other moves. The hard truth about accommodating all requests is that helping one, comes often at the expense of someone elseโ€™s child.

When allocating children to classes, we endeavour to foster positive social interaction across a year group, by making socially balanced classes and to help prevent non-constructive relationships. Class time is distinctly โ€˜workโ€™ time and outside play time is a childโ€™s opportunity to be with friends and โ€˜hang outโ€™.ย Obviously developing resilience is key for our students, as they develop into lifelong learners in an ever-changing world. We need to prepare children for secondary school where they will have different classes, different teachers, and different groups of children. Eventually our children will be adults where they might not get the job that they wanted or perhaps the university course that wasnโ€™t their first choice. Iโ€™m passionate about this and preparing our children together is paramount.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Monday was our first opportunity to hear from our โ€˜would-beโ€™ school captains for 2025, as many students spoke to their peers on why they would be the best candidate for the positions next year. After carefully scrutinised voting by all students, a shortlist of candidates was drawn up and those students were considered by the leadership team, teaching and support staff. Whilst it was an immensely difficult task, as we were spoilt for choice, we have made a decision and this will be announced very soon. Congratulations to all who had the courage to present in front of their peers with commitment, passion for their school and confidence!

Resilience is a Key Factor in Student Success

For many years, I have subscribed to โ€˜Parenting Ideasโ€™ written and managed by expert Michael Grose. Please take the time to listen to the YouTube clip that discusses anxiety and how to build resilience. It was wonderful to hear Michael talk about how we can make ourselves, as parents, redundant. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n86EHCKDSZI#t=13

Resilience is a 21st Century parenting concept that every parent needs to understand. Some kids are resilient by nature โ€“ their temperament helps them to be mentally and psychologically tough. You know those kids. They get straight back up after a setback or disappointment. Rejection in the playground doesnโ€™t faze them. Unfortunately, not every child has such natural resilience.

The good news is that most of the research shows that resilience can be nurtured and developed, particularly when parents themselves are resilient and they actively foster it in their kids. Resilient kids share four basic skill sets- independence, problem-solving, optimism and social connection.

Building Resilience

From a resilience perspective parents need to coach kids through some of their more challenging moments and reviewing what they may have learned for next time. Avoid solving all their problems for them. You can promote a lasting sense of resilience in your kids by:

  1. Having a positive attitude yourself. Your attitude as a parent impacts on their ability to bounce back from some of the difficulties they face. Make sure you model a โ€˜you can do itโ€™ attitude for your child when they meet some of lifeโ€™s curve balls.
  2. Look for teachable moments. Many kidsโ€™ learning opportunities are disguised as problems. Make the most of these opportunities so that kids can grow and learn from some of the challenges they face.
  3. Make kids active participants in the family. Active participation in a family develops the self-help, problem-solving and independence skills of kids that are necessary for resilience.
  4. Build kids coping skills. There are plenty of strategies you can pass on to kids to help them cope when life doesnโ€™t go their way, including acceptance, getting away for awhile, and normalisation.

Promoting resilience in kids is a not a single event but a continuous process that requires adults to be supportive and empathetic when things donโ€™t go their way. It also requires you as a parent to have an understanding of resilience, so you have faith in your yourself, and your childโ€™s ability to cope.

WELLBEING

SEW 1/2G

In 1/ 2 our SEW lessons have focused on navigating different situations in both the classroom and out in the yard. We have been working through social stories and acting out how we might respond in different situations. Together we have practiced conflict resolution in 3 steps: 1. Self check. 2. Honest communication. 3. Find a solution. Today, we focused on what positive characteristics we look for in a friend. Many students thought about their own friendships and shared their compliments with each other!

PIZZA IN THE PARK

Pizza in the Park 2024 โ€“ 200 Nights of Reading

A major encouragement for students to complete home reading at Wandong Primary School is the opportunity to share Pizza in the Park with their friends and teachers.

This will be celebrated across TWO days this year, according to studentsโ€™ surnames:

MONDAY 16 DECEMBER, A-K SURNAMES

TUESDAY 17 DECEMBER, L-Z SURNAMES

ย

The cut-off date will be Friday 29 November. After this date, no further students can be added to our lists. An alert will be emailed to indicate when the event has opened on Compass for you to consent and select pizza flavours. (Pizza selection is made via the Questions Tab in the event.) Once the event is opened, consent and pizza selection must be made no later than Monday 9 December.

On their day, students will leave school at 1:00 p.m. and walk to L.B. Davern Reserve. Once there, the children will enjoy pizza together.ย All students will then have the opportunity to play on the playย equipment, or with some sports equipment, before they head back to school at 2:00 p.m.ย  (If it is raining, we will eat pizza at school).

OFFICE NOTICES

Office Hours : - 8:30am until 3:55pm

Picking Up Children โ€“ Please help our admin team!

In exceptional circumstances and emergencies, at times children need to be collected from school early. Please help our wonderful administration team by ensuring that this is not done during the break times of 11:00-11:30am and 1:45-2:30pm. When children are outside playing with their friends, they do not hear the announcements and it is difficult to have a staff member unlock classrooms to collect bags and belongings. Please help support our classroom programs by waiting until 3:30pm to collect children. The admin area is growing quite hectic in the afternoons with families collecting children early. Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.

IMPORTANT: โ€“ Mobile Phone/Watch/Device Policy

In 2020, DET introduced strict restrictions on the use of any device with access to a cellular system, with or without a physical connection to a network. Where students bring a device of this type to school, it MUST be placed in secure storage at the office.

IMPORTANT: โ€“ Student Information

It is very important we have up-to-date information for all students. Please check Compass and update current home & email address, phone numbers & medical details.

Reminder: –

Hats must be worn throughout Term Four & Term one outside. If they don’t have a hat, they can only play in a shaded area.
